NIST MEP Manufacturing Disaster Assessment Program (MDAP)

Helping to Create a More Resilient Florida

Hurricane Irma, the fifth strongest Atlantic hurricane on record made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 Hurricane on September 10, 2017. Hurricanes frequently strike Florida, more than any other state. Irma’s path up the center of the state left unparalleled widespread devastation in Florida, affecting individuals and businesses in all of Florida’s 67 counties with loss estimates of over $50 billion.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, FloridaMakes, the official representative of the MEP National NetworkTM in Florida, received a Manufacturing Disaster Assessment Program (MDAP) grant from NIST MEP to identify obstacles preventing affected manufacturers from returning to normal operations, to help them develop plans to support recovery, and to determine best practices before, during and after a hurricane. In accomplishing this, FloridaMakes will assist manufacturers in preparing for future disasters, and help determine a best pathway to a more resilient Florida.

FloridaMakes will provide free disaster recovery and readiness assessments, and business continuity assessments to Florida manufacturers. Following the results of an initial assessment, a more detailed evaluation may be conducted assessing operational interests such as infrastructure, communication, operations, supply chain issues, IT/Cybersecurity, financials, workforce, and more. The results of the assessments will be used to provide recommendations to companies to drive best practice and implement business continuity strategies and to develop plans to optimize resilience.

The goal of MDAP is to assist as many manufacturers as possible restore to their operations, retain their workforce, prepare for future disasters, and to safeguard the resilience of Florida’s economy.
