Tips for Personal and Home Office Security

These resources from the National Cyber Security Alliance on securing your home office and your wireless network is a great reminder for all of us who work remotely (from home and often the road) about some simple steps that we each can take to reduce our vulnerabilities in working from home or remote office location(s). Click here to view a free webinar recording.

5 key tips:

  1. Be careful of your passwords (don’t reuse passwords across different platforms!, use a password manager) and of scams trying to obtain your login credentials (especially for financial or work accounts).
  2. Update your software (operating systems, etc) regularly on all your devices (laptops/PCs, phones, tablets, printers, routers, etc.)
  3. Backup, Backup, Backup (at least 3 places & 2 types (cloud & physical disk) every 3 months)

For your home wi-fi network:

  1. Check & if necessary update the settings on your home network router. Click here for more information about this. Incorrectly configured home wi-fi networks are a rapidly increasing point of vulnerability.

On the road:

  1. Use your own (password-secured) wi-fi hotspot (e.g. from your phone), or a Virtual Private Network on any “public” (coffee shop/airport/hotel) wi-fi to avoid a third party surreptitiously snooping on your login information or activities.
