Event Description

The objectives of the DoD SBIR/STTR programs include stimulating technological innovation, strengthening the role of small business in meeting DoD research and development needs, fostering and encouraging participation by minority and disadvantaged persons in technological innovation, and increasing the commercial application of DoD-supported research or research and development results. The DOD and its components are focused on technological solutions to support the warfighter and national security needs. The DOD’s SBIR/STTR budget is about ~$1.8B each fiscal year. The budgets, funding levels, and processes vary among the DOD components (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, DARPA, etc.) including a wide range of targeted topics based on mission requirements. The DOD seeks small high technology firms with the R&D capabilities, internal and external, to deliver a technologically advanced solution for their expressed need. It is vitally important to understand this landscape before investing time and money to seek funding.

The DOD is the customer. They issue research topics that align with their mission of providing national security all over the globe. The Navy, the Marines, the Air Force, the Army, DARPA, and several other sub-components participate in their programs by engaging small R&D firms to respond to their research topics. The DOD issues contracts rather than grants.
